Up-cycling, thrifting and why it’s good

I strongly believe that we all have heard of up-cycling and thrift stores before. If you haven’t that’s ok because I will explain. Thrift stores or also called charity shops are stores that sell peoples old clothes to prevent them from being thrown out or ending up in landfills. They play an important part in the matter if fast fashion as through multiple people owning one Something the piece of clothing’s life becomes more. Now up-cycling is something that comes hand in hand with thrifting for most people. As it is taking an old piece of clothing and creating a new one. These project can be simple or more elaborate.

personally I love doing both and sadly in Germany we have little to no charity shops as it is just not a thing. So whenever I go to England the first thing I want to do is go charity shopping. There are multiple reasons why I love it so much such as of course the environmental factor but also because you can find so many unique pieces of clothing that maybe nobody else who you know owns. It can also be helpful if you want expand your closet or find your personal style without breaking your bank.Up-cycling can be done with thrifted clothes, your old clothes or hand me downs.

If you want some simple ideas you can always search online or you can checkout Pinterest. Mentioning that I will also create a Pinterest board full of up-cycling ideas. More ideas can also be found on YouTube.now before we finish this weeks blog post I wanted to get back to a problem that I have mentioned earlier in this post and that is that not every country has thrift stores/ charity shops and I wanted to create some things you can do if you don’t have these shops available.

  1. You can shop online. Yes there are charity shops that sell online and that will ship to you country. Some examples are bullshit boutique, the britisch Red Cross and more.
  2. ask in your family and close friends if they have any old clothes that they want to get rid of. You can look through and see if there is anything that you might like.
  3. visit charity shops when your on holiday. It sounds lame but it’s actually really fund you get to keep a souvenir from vacation that is helpful and doesn’t just lay around.

and that’s it for this week stay tuned for our next blog post and don’t forget to follow us on Pinterest @justasklilly
